Edson Arantes do Nascimento was born on October 23, 1940 in Três Corações, Brazil. He had a very poor childhood and had to shine shoes to get money, but since he was a teenager he used to play football with his father. It was a colleague in school who gave him his nickname. Pelé Said that his nickname means nothing and he didn´t like it when he was in school.
Because he was poor he could not afford a school to learn football; instead he learned it from his father. He used to play with a paper because he didn´t have money to buy a ball.
When he was 14 he started playing for a Professional team managed by a former Brazilian footballer. It was in 1954 that the team where he was playing won and before he was 16 Pelé started playing for a team called Santos Football Club, first in the Junior level and then on the senior. His career was full of awards and victories and he played on three champions in his four World Cups. He is considered one of the greatest player of the history of soccer.
Now he is retired and does not work as a soccer player anymore but he helps the society a lot by raising money and supporting hospitals that take care of sick children.
